They say the journey is just as important as the destination—and nowhere is that more true than the Sea to Sky Highway. This iconic stretch from Vancouver to Whistler (and beyond if you’re feeling adventurous) has it all: waterfalls that roar, gondolas that soar, and turquoise lakes that honestly look photoshopped. It’s the perfect day trip from Vancouver, whether you’re a local or just visiting. If you’re flying in or staying in the city without a vehicle, it’s easy to pick up a car in Vancouver and hit the road for a day of adventure. I did the whole thing in a day, and while I slept like a rock afterward, I wouldn’t change a thing. Here’s how my day went down—complete with photo ops, short hikes, epic views, and more than one very necessary snack break, all while exploring the best of Sea to Sky Highway attractions.
Stop #1: Goldie Donut — Breakfast & Coffee to Fuel Your Adventure
Before hitting the Sea to Sky Highway, there’s no better way to kick off the day than with a fresh coffee and donut at Goldie Donut. Trust me, this place is a local gem. The donuts are warm, fluffy, and just the right amount of sweet. It’s a quick, tasty pit stop that’ll put a smile on your face before the adventure begins.

Stop #2: Porteau Cove Provincial Park — Chill Oceanfront Vibes to Start Your Day
With your sweet treat and caffeine kick in hand, take the short drive up to Porteau Cove Provincial Park—a peaceful waterfront stop that’s perfect for stretching your legs and soaking in stunning views of Howe Sound. The long wooden pier is perfect for a leisurely walk, offering a serene backdrop of the ocean and mountains. You might even spot seals and eagles while boats cruise by, and if you’re lucky, a few local scuba divers exploring the reef below. It’s the ideal spot to breathe in some fresh air, snap a few photos, and ease into the day’s adventure before diving into the mountains ahead.
Stop #3: Britannia Mine Museum — Where Science Meets Sparkle
After the peaceful vibes of Porteau Cove, it’s time to switch gears and head to the Britannia Mine Museum. Just a short drive up the road, this spot takes you from the calm waters of Howe Sound into the heart of Canada’s mining history. I couldn’t help but think back to our day trip to Silver plume mine tour in Georgetown Colorado, which offered that underground, hard-hat-on experience.
But Britannia really ramps it up with its immersive storytelling, modern technology, and jaw-dropping views. This isn’t just a museum—it’s a full-on experience where you can dive into the past of one of Canada’s most important mining operations. Start by hopping aboard the underground mine train, which takes you deep into the tunnels once used to extract copper. A guide will walk you through how the equipment worked, and you’ll get to see live demonstrations of mining tools in action (trust me, the sound of those drills is intense—but so cool!).

Once you’ve gotten your hands dirty, head to the BOOM! Show inside the massive historic concentrator building. This multi-sensory light-and-sound spectacle literally shakes the walls and gives you a true feel for what it was like when this place was in full operation. After the tour, try your hand at gold panning (fool’s gold excitement is real, folks), and explore the interactive exhibits at the visitor center. It’s a place where history and fun collide, and you can easily spend some time just exploring and learning.

Be sure to book your tickets in advance—this place gets busy, and you won’t want to miss out on the full experience.
Stop #4: Shannon Falls — Quick Walk, Big Payoff
Next up on your Sea to Sky adventure: Shannon Falls, BC’s third tallest waterfall and an absolute showstopper. The walk from the parking lot to the base of the falls is ridiculously easy—just a quick 10-minute stroll, and bam, you’re hit with the mist and the thunderous roar of water crashing down from over 130 meters. It’s the kind of spot where you can’t help but stop and take it all in.
If you’re in the mood to stretch your legs a little more, there’s an extended hike that takes you up to Upper Shannon Falls. The trail is a bit more of a workout, but the payoff is totally worth it. We opted for the easy route this time (saving my legs for later stops), but if you’re up for it, the upper viewpoint definitely gives you that “above it all” feeling. Either way, it’s a must-see stop with some serious natural beauty!
Stop #5: Lunch & Mural Hunting in Squamish
After all that excitement, it’s time to refuel. Squamish has some great spots to satisfy your cravings, depending on your mood. If you’re in the mood for something fresh and vibrant, head to Saha Eatery, where they serve up healthy, delicious bowls full of bright flavors. For those craving something lighter and flavorful, Steve’s Poke Bar is the perfect spot to grab a poke bowl with all your favorite toppings. And if you’re leaning towards something a bit heartier, Anh Noodle Fusion offers mouth-watering Vietnamese fusion dishes that’ll hit the spot. We went to Saha Eatery, and it did not disappoint. The food was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we needed after the morning of exploring.

Once your hunger’s satisfied, take some time to explore the Squamish murals scattered around the town. They’ve got an impressive collection of street art that’s perfect for snapping a few cool photos and getting a feel for the local creative scene.

Stop #6: Sea to Sky Gondola & Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge
Now that you’re refreshed and ready for the next adventure, it’s time to head to the Sea to Sky Gondola. This was one of the top highlights of the trip (and definitely the most vertical). As you glide smoothly up the mountainside in a sleek glass cabin, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Howe Sound, snow-capped peaks, and forests that seem to stretch on forever. The ride itself is an experience, but it’s the views and the adventure waiting for you at the top that really steal the show.

Now, let’s talk suspension bridges. British Columbia has an almost obsessive love for them—between the Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver, the Sky Pilot up here, and the Train Wreck Bridge further down, it feels like being suspended in mid-air is a part of the local hiking culture. I’ll be honest—I’ve never been the biggest fan of heights. But when you’re standing 2,000 feet above the valley, surrounded by jagged peaks and glacier-fed rivers, it’s hard to let fear take over. The Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge does sway a little, but it’s much less intense than Capilano, so it’s a bit easier to manage (even for those of us with a fear of heights!).

At the top, there’s plenty to do if you’re not quite ready to head back down. Take in the sweeping panoramas from the multiple viewing platforms, which offer perfect spots for photos or simply soaking in the stunning landscape. If you’re in the mood to stretch your legs, there are also a few short and long alpine trails that lead to even more breathtaking views, giving you the chance to explore more of the mountain’s beauty before you head back to the gondola. Once you’re back at the base of the gondola, treat yourself to some delicious ice cream from the Praguery Ice Cream Truck—a perfect way to end a day of adventure with a sweet, cool treat.
Be sure to book your tickets in advance to avoid any long waits and to guarantee your spot for this must-see adventure!
Stop #7: Brandywine Falls — A Short Stroll to a Big Drop
After all that adrenaline, it’s time to dial it down a bit with something a little more relaxed, but no less impressive. Just a short drive south, Brandywine Falls offers the perfect palate cleanser. A mere few minutes off Highway 99, this waterfall is one of those “wow” moments that you don’t have to work too hard for. The 70-meter drop of glacial meltwater is a sight to behold, and you can enjoy it with minimal effort — the viewing platform is just a quick stroll from the parking lot.

But don’t let the ease of access fool you — the dramatic beauty of the falls will make you feel like you’ve just stumbled upon nature’s hidden gem. Whether you take in the view from the platform or choose to venture a little farther down the trail for a closer look, Brandywine Falls is the perfect spot to catch your breath and savor the simple beauty of the Sea to Sky Highway.
Stop #8: Train Wreck Trail — Graffiti Meets Nature
But, of course, not all stops along the Sea to Sky Highway are just about peaceful waterfalls and mountain views. If you’re ready for something a little more unexpected, the Train Wreck Trail is a fun and funky next stop.

Just a short drive from Brandywine, this quirky trail leads you into the forest, where you’ll discover a literal train wreck from the 1950s — but with a twist. The old boxcars, now covered in colorful graffiti, feel like a cool collision of urban street art and wild, untamed nature. A short suspension bridge adds a little extra excitement on your way there, and the wreck itself makes for some seriously unique photo ops. This is one of those places where art and nature come together in the most unexpected, and totally awesome, way.
Stop #9: Whistler Olympic Plaza — Chill Vibes & People-Watching
After all the hiking, waterfalls, and train wrecks, it’s time to unwind a bit. As you roll into Whistler Village, the energy of the place is contagious, but if you’re looking to kick back and soak it all in without breaking a sweat, Olympic Plaza is the perfect spot. This is where the village comes alive — families, tourists, and locals all gather here, creating a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for some serious people-watching.
I made a beeline for the grass, stretched out, and grabbed a refreshing cold drink (because, hydration!). The plaza itself is buzzing with life, and you can’t help but get caught up in the easy-going vibe. Whether you’re people-watching or just soaking in the mountain views, it’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down.
Stop #10: Whistler Village Stroll
After soaking in the chill vibes at Olympic Plaza, it’s time to explore the heart of Whistler Village itself. This pedestrian-only haven is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, with cobblestone streets, quaint boutiques, and cozy cafes at every corner. It’s easy to lose track of time here, wandering in and out of shops, grabbing a coffee, or just people-watching as you go.
Whether you’re hunting for mountain gear, local art, or a new pair of sunglasses, there’s something for everyone. The village has this charming alpine vibe, with charming chalet-style architecture, and you’ll often hear the sounds of live music or street performers filling the air. It’s a laid-back, yet vibrant spot that’s perfect for slowing down and soaking in the local atmosphere.
Stop #11: Dinner and Drive Back to Vancouver
After a day of adventure and exploration, it’s time to wind down and head back to Vancouver. If you’re feeling hungry and in the mood for something delicious, Functional Pie Pizzeria is a perfect stop before you hit the road. Their wood-fired pizzas are as satisfying as they come — the kind of meal that’ll fuel you up for the drive ahead. Plus, the vibe at the pizzeria is casual and cozy, making it a great place to relax and refuel.
But if you’re not quite ready for dinner and want to save your appetite for when you get back to the city, why not hold out for a late-night bite? For us, there’s nothing better than a warm, comforting bowl of ramen, and Ramen Danbo in Vancouver has become one of our go-to spots. It’s the perfect way to cap off the journey — a steaming bowl of noodles to ease you into a satisfying end to your trip. After the drive back, you’ll find yourself reflecting on the beautiful moments of the day, already looking forward to the next time you take on the Sea to Sky Highway.
Final Thoughts: One Day, Countless “Whoa” Moments
The Sea to Sky Highway manages to pack more into a single day than most road trips do over an entire weekend. From the towering beauty of waterfalls to quirky graffiti-covered train wrecks, every stop along the way is like uncovering a hidden gem. It’s the kind of drive that constantly pulls you over to the side of the road — each stop offering something new and unexpected.
So, here’s the deal: pack snacks, make sure your camera is fully charged (you’ll need it), and don’t forget that rain jacket — this is BC, after all. Whether you’re hiking, sightseeing, or just soaking in the views, you’ll find yourself saying “whoa” more times than you can count. This route is as wild and scenic as they come, leaving you with memories that’ll stay with you long after the drive is over.
